Why are people so obsessed with big things like houses, cars, boats and lot's and lot's of clothing?

my house can fit into a bathroom of some of these houses i see upper middle class people have. it makes no sense to me why they have to have things like this when they could just build them a moderately sized house and three others like it for someone less fortunate, they have 30 pairs of shoes when there are so many who have to wear the same pair for three years. will someone give me a legitamate answer?

I am not one of those people myself but I would assume that some people need this to feel good about themselves. If they were raised having these things then it would just seem normal to them.
Reply:Most people desire success because it provides material comfort. If having wealth didn't allow people to have nicer things, why wouuld anyone bother with it?
Reply:They think it makes their lives better and they also see other people doing it. If a CEO of a corporation is buying the most expensive boat then everybody is talking about it and everbody else wants to be like them.

It's called afffluenza or materialism. It's not really a crime to own a lot because everbody has different opinions on what to do with their money.

They just want to be the talk of the town or feel sucessful and powerful.

Some people buy boats because they love sailing or fishing and it actually is a lot of fun to do that sort of thing.
