Reply:The "upper" of a shoe is all the upper part of a shoe which normally covers the foot, from the toe, sides and heel.


The part over your instep is called the "vamp", the heel part is called the "counter".


When you see the label you cite, it means the the sole, heel, linings, and the insoles of the shoe are man made materials.





I've been away too long to remember all the "fakes" and there are no doubt new ones.


Some are a form of plastic. There was once "Corlon", (DuPont), which I doubt is in use.


The problems with "Plastics" and derivatives is that they don't "breath". Leather is porous, as our skin is porous, (pores). This permits air to pass through leather, and allows perspiration to escape. Plastics do not. Neither do plastics conform to the foot as leather does.


There are shoes made of linen, used for custom dying. Some are made of Gabardine, and of course canvas.


There are many "fake exotic leathers", which resemble alligator, ostrich, and snake skin, etc.


Most of these are done with leather, but many are not.
