Who Knows About Running?

Hey, I'm 14, 5'6, 115 pounds. Ok, I wanted to start running, but all I ever read about running is bad things.

I read:

Running causes bad knees and joints

Running makes you thin, and lose muscle mass, and lose weight

Running doesn't even make you lose fat, it just burns water weight which you drink right back

Now, I have the proper shoes for running, and avoiding bad knee joints (Gel ASICS-Kayano 14).

But, I want to know, if I run, will I become thinner by losing fat? Also, will I get bigger, and toned legs if I run combined with 80 lunges, both together on alternating days, with 110 grams of protein, and proper nutrition?

Also, will I lose upper body mass from running?

Because if I'm going to get thinner, and it's not even from losing fat, gain no muscle, then there's absolutely no point in running, except for the heart, which I have a good one, I'm trying to gain muscle, and lose fat.

Who Knows About Running?
- bad knees and joints - it can aggravate already bad knees and joints, and its not as good as moving on a bike or elliptical, but lets face it, people have been running for centuries, and the good far outweighs the bad

- you dont lose muscle mass from running, you would gain it slightly from using those leg muscles.

you will burn fat anytime you get youre heart rate up high. running or boxing burns fat in the exact same way, youre just using a different part of the body to make the heart beat faster. this will cause you to burn more fat, since fat is the body's fuel reserve, and it needs fuel to work

- water weight? LOL, whoever told you this is retarded with a capital R. thats not true in the slightest.

okay, lunges will help you get bigger toned legs, but what you really want to do is squats. lunges are good, but squats are a bit better i think. if you dont have access to a gym, push ups, chin ups, squats, deadlifts, and stomach crunches is generally a decent full body workout when you have no equipment.

hold something heavy when you do the squats or deadlifts to give you more resistance

fat is like a layer that coats the muscles on the outside. if you run, the fat shrinks, giving the appearance of more toned muscles, so if youre doing strength training youll puff up from the inside, and then lose any fat on the outside from running.

its best to do both.

running is healthy for your heart and your whole body, and the benefits are totally worth any BS about sore joints.

to put it in perspective, when youre 70 yrs old, your joints might hurt a tiny bit more from running than if you had been biking. its not something to worry about, especially since if you hadnt ran at all, you could be dead by 70

as for the protien, remember this, you can only absorb 20 grams at one time. if you eat 110 grams all at once youre going to crap most of it out. eat beans in the morning, beans in the afternoon, and fish at night. or fish all the time if you want. sardines are a good choice that have low toxins and high benefits, plus they are cheap and in every grocery store.

eat the bones too, great source of calcium, and they are soft enough you can crunch them.

generally speaking if you wanna get bigger, you should be doing sets of 8-12 when you do any exercises like squats, BUT, i know youve heard that before, so to make it more clear, you need to reach muscle failure between 8-12.

dont just aim for 12 and call it a day. if you can do 50 before your legs give out, you need to throw some sacks of potatoes on your back. you want you legs to burn and fizzle out between 8-12 so you couldnt do another one if you tried.

remember that fact when working out, its valuable, and most trainers wont tell you that. ALWAYS work out until you cant do anymore. if the most push ups you can do at once is 67, do 67, then next time get someone to put their feet on your back and do as many as possible. more than 12 reps is building endurance and strength, but less reps with oodles of weight will bulk you up more, but you HAVE to make sure youre working until you cant squeeze out another rep

good luck boss
Reply:I didnt read any of that but what I do when Im home is I just run 3 miles every day. Basically just do it at a pace so you can make it to the end and pace up as you get better.
Reply:Im on the track team and exactly your size/ age....

you get toned up in running, you use your arms more then you think and overall the girls want you more hehe. I also have the same shoes as you and they are great. running is all about shoes. also dont run on side walk, run on the road and softer surfaces as sidewalk will hurt your knees.
Reply:whoever told you that crap should be shot. If you run ,which is almost the best thing for exercising next to swimming, you will lose weight and gain toned muscular legs. You will get abs and tight gluts. running is a great exercise
Reply:i don't know where you read that stuff at, because running is really good for you. i run and it makes me feel great.

btw you sound like a wrestler or something haha.

but if you want to lose weight and gain muscle, then your plan sounds pretty good. it would probably help to add some sort of protein shake before all of that though, because that will help you gain muscle mass. i did that for soccer.

hope this helps:)
Reply:I'm a runner .

and you will become thinner IF you eat right and you run the way your supposed to .

you cant run and eat junk food .

that wont do anything for you .

but you will get toned legs .

they wont get huge legs .

but yeah you'll get muscle .

you wont lose a lot of upper body mass .

if you want to lose that, id recommend crunches .

:DDDDD
Reply:You lose muscle? That's a ridiculous lie. You build up muscle in your legs, and if you put weights on your arms while running, your arms will have to adjust to the weight while pumping back and forth. Who cares if you get bad knees? You're living longer anyway. There may be some disadvantages to running, but there are 3 times more advantages.
Reply:Let's get things straight, running is for athletes and it is proven, that the more kilometers you run the closer you are getting to wearing out your joints in knees first then foot then hips etc. If you want to lose weight, go for sit ups, gentle at first, small amounts of jogging, swimming. Eat high fibre low fat and low sugar diets.
Reply:Oh running is good you will lose wait but there is a risk at pains or injuries. The best way to lose weight is to get a gym membership (it doesn't have to be expensive) and ALWAYS eat healthy! So i hope this helps you stay fit! ;-)
